Part Time Firefighters
The Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department part time firefighters are essential members of the GTMFD emergency services team. Their dedication and commitment are integral to our ability to provide the very best service to those who need our help.
In return, they receive career training and experience in Fire, EMS, and other technical areas, hourly compensation, and the greatest benefit of all -- the satisfaction derived from serving the community and helping those in need.
Time Commitment
GTMFD part time firefighters are required to make a substantial time commitment. They must be certified in the following areas within (1) one year from date of hire:
- Firefighter I & II Certification - 6 months
- Medical First Responder - 6 weeks
- Hazmat Operations - 2 weekends
There are other certifications for our part time firefighters, however they are not initially required, and are dependent upon your function within the department.
Qualifications
The be considered for a GTMFD part time firefighter positions, you must:
- Be 18 years of age, or older
- High School Diploma
- Live within range of the Metro Fire District (East Bay Township, Acme Township or Garfield Township or City of Traverse)
- Have a clear driving record
- Be in good physical condition & Drug Free
- Be able to take orders and follow directions
Application Process
You must complete and return a GTMFD application to the Administrative Office located at 897 Parsons Road. Upon receiving your application you will then be scheduled for an interview with the Fire Chief and / or Station Captain. upon successful completion of this process, a background investigation will be done, and the candidate will be asked to take a physical examination paid for by the department. Once passed and completed, you will then be assigned to a fire station, and issued the required protective equipment.
