About Us

Located in Northern Michigan, Grand Traverse Metro Emergency Services Authority is a unique fire department that consists of three former township fire departments outside of the Traverse City area. Metro Fire now operates as one department since 1980.

GTMESA provides services to Acme Township, East Bay Charter Township and Garfield Charter Township. Each township supervisor (or designee) makes up the Grand Traverse Metro Emergency Services Board who governs GTMESA.

Full-time in Fire Administration we have the Fire Chief, one Human Resource/Office Manager, one Administrative Assistants, and one Operation / Purchasing Administrator. In Fire Prevention, we have an Assistant Chief / Fire Marshal, one Fire Inspector / Plans Reviewer / Investigator, a Fire Inspector / Investigator, two Fire Inspectors and one Fire and Life Safety Educator. Our Operations / Suppression sector is overseen by an Assistant Chief, 4 Station Captains, and 10 Station Lieutenants. Our membership consists of a combination 11 full time / 60+ part time firefighters.

Today, GTMESA responds 35 pieces of apparatus out of five stations. These include engines, tankers, ladder truck, heavy rescues, wildfire trucks, water supply truck, air supply vehicle, medical units (Squads), chief command vehicles, fire investigator vehicles, rescue boat, rescue sleds, ATVs and public education vehicle. GTMESA has four station Captains that oversee 40+ part time fire service personnel working out of those five stations.
